Whatever style or color scheme you use to decorate your family room, be sure to keep it comfortable. I wouldn't recommend formal style furniture in your family room since it is a gathering room where people want to relax. And remember, in a room where many gather, there are more spots and stains. Choose furniture with upholstry that is stain resistant or with covers that are easy to remove and wash. Upholstry with dark colors or having leather furniture are great choices for a family room. Adding ottomans or foot rests are also nice pieces to prop your feet up, and they provide extra seating when you have a lot of people filling the room.
You will obviously need a room and on the assumption that you don't have a spare room that isn't assigned for the non-existent guests, you might want to look at converting a loft space or basement, this is shut off from the world, won't impose on the rest of the house and if you're cunning enough, can be built without anyone else knowing. Clear out the room of any old junk and begin to make it safe, remove damp from the basement and install flooring in a loft. Once set up, decorate your room, white walls are best as they won't make it feel like a small space and make you feel like a recluse. Flooring should be simple, preferably wood or laminate that is easy to clean and won't require heaving a vacuum up some stairs. Decorate the room in a manly fashion, movie posters and old vinyl covers and definitely none of those girly canvasses or black and white photos your other half will undoubtedly have around the house. Make sure you have the most comfortable and unique chair but ensure there is enough space for all your friends. A large L-shaped sofa will be the most efficient but a couple of sofa-beds will also mean that your friends can stay over when their wives are no longer talking to them for spending so much time at yours.
Once you have chosen all the games you would like to include in your game room, you should decide if you would like to include a bar. If you choose to include a bar, you can either have a custom one built and installed or you can purchase one from your local home store. You can include game themed glasses, dishes and bottles to make your bar game room friendly. Now that you have all your games and maybe a bar, you can now decorate the room. You can choose from gamed themed pictures and signs. If you have a bar you can decorate with signs of your favorite beer or liquor. You can buy your signs and pictures online or in the store. If you buy your signs online, most sites will let you customize them with your name, picture or phrase that you like.
You can choose from posters to paintings and canvas prints to art pieces, and the options still would not end there. Contemporary art is only one way to go. Other options include children's themes, sports themes, clown themes, book themes, and even movie themes among others. Again, you will find many options here as well. Globes are a great choice for almost any kind of gameroom and they come in many different styles, sizes and colors. Boat figurines bring a nice addition to any room, and things like statues of musical instruments or interesting pieces like nautical helmets are also interesting choices. Gameroom décor isn't complete without poker items like the famous dog picture and a deck of cards and some poker chips. Put them on a shelf and thank your lucky stars you thought to put them there next time you have friends over and the kids have gone to bed.
